As a traditional street food in Turkey, simit is very similar to bagels. You can find simit-sellers everywhere on the streets. It is usually consumed during breakfast and during tea time.
Simit bread rings are also popular as a cheap and delicious street taste throughout Middle East and Balkans. You too can bake simit at home as delicious as the ones are sold on the streets. Here are the ingredients and directions for making simit bread rings at home:
Make Your Own Simit Bread Rings At Home
Ingredients: 1 glasss of warm milk, 1 glass of warm water, 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 pack of yeast, and 1 teaspoon of salt, 3 cups of all purpose flour.
For Top: 1 teacup of water, 1 teacup of molasses, 1 cup of sesame seeds.
Instructions:
1- First of all add the yeast to the warm water in a bowl and mix.
2- Add the sugar and let it rest for 10 minutes.
3- Now add the salt, vegetable oil, milk and mix all.
4- Add the flour gradually and knead to get a harder dough than usual.
5- Put the dough aside for about 30 minutes.
6- When it rises, take it on the counter and knead for a short while.
7- For straight appearance, you can take out walnut-size piece, roll-it and connect the two edges.
8- For twist appearance, get the two pieces and twist them all around and again connect the edges.
9- In another bowsl mix the water and molasses.
10- Put the sesame seeds on a plate.
11- Place baking paper on the baking tray.
12- Dip the simit rings first to the liquid mixture and then to the sesame seeds.
13- Place them on the baking tray with a distance.
14- Now it’s time to rest them for 30 minutes on the tray covered on the top.
15- Bake them on the pre-heated oven for 20-25 minutes until brown at 200 degrees.
